CALAVERA / SKELETON
This sculpture is inspired by my deep respect for the cycle of life and the significance between life and death. In my tradition we often contemplate the idea of life and death and traditionally created characters surrounding these ideas called ‘Nahual’. In this case I created a character in a traditional bust style that is half skeleton and half human. Calavera, is the Spanish word for skeleton. In this sculpture I explore the visual capacity of my concept to create something that can be either human or skeleton and ultimately both at the same time. In addition to honoring or memorializing the idea of life and death, I also feel the need create images that symbolize the delicate balance of the cycle of life.
