QEUTZALCOATL / FEATHERED SERPENT
Quetzalcoatl is a Nahuatl word meaning Feathered Serpent in the traditional Native language of Mexico. It represents the energy of duality and the joining of sky and earth a combination of the celestial and terrestrial. Quetzalcoatl is also a directional character pertaining to the East and often represented as the rising sun. In this contemporary interpretation I explore the sculptural symbolism as it pertains to Quetzalcoatl pulling inspiration from a variety of tribal pictographs that include the Maya, Mexihca, and Mixteca. My goal was to create a visually dynamic sculpture that embraces the traditional symbols pertaining to Quetzalcoatl while also capture the natural look and feel of a real serpent.
