LA PALABRA / THE WORD
This piece was inspired by my passion, fascination, and love for my Native Mexican heritage. This piece is from a series where I explore the stories of creation. Within my cultural traditions, we have a very important deity/character called ‘Ocelotl’, or jaguar. In this story of creation, the humans pretend to be animals and the animals pretend to be humans. In this sculpture, I depict a jaguar or ocelotl sitting as if he were human. As he sits, he is speaking. This is a very important symbol and metaphor in my culture because we believe in the power and energy of words or voice. In addition, this sculpture represents the ability to use your words to manifest your own reality. Ocelotl or Jaguar is sitting in a human pose and has finally found his voice or 'Palabra'. The jaguar also represents creativity, strength,
​and humility.
